Grand Egyptian Museum: Exploring Egypt’s Incredible New Museum
Grand Egyptian Museum: Exploring Egypt’s Incredible New Museum
Located just outside Cairo near the famous Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum is one of the most ambitious museum projects ever built.
After years of planning and construction, the museum now offers visitors a stunning modern space dedicated entirely to the history of ancient Egypt.
During my visit I filmed a cinematic 4K travel video capturing the scale, architecture, and incredible artefacts displayed throughout the museum.
The Largest Museum Dedicated to Ancient Egypt
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest archaeological museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation.
The museum contains more than 100,000 artefacts from ancient Egypt, spanning thousands of years of history.
Many of these artefacts were previously stored in archives or displayed in the historic Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo.
The new museum allows them to be displayed in a much larger and more modern setting.
The Treasures of Tutankhamun
One of the most exciting features of the museum is the complete collection of artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun.
These objects were discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings.
For the first time, the entire collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures can be displayed together in one place.
This includes jewellery, ceremonial objects, chariots, statues, and many personal belongings from the young pharaoh’s tomb.
Incredible Architecture
Even before entering the galleries, the museum itself is an architectural masterpiece.
The massive entrance hall features enormous statues and dramatic open spaces designed to highlight the scale of ancient Egyptian monuments.
Large windows also provide stunning views toward the Pyramids of Giza in the distance, connecting the artefacts inside the museum with the monuments that still stand outside.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
The museum offers a completely different experience from the older Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo (read my review here).
While the older museum has a historic and slightly chaotic charm, the Grand Egyptian Museum presents ancient artefacts in a modern, carefully designed environment with world-class exhibitions.
If you have time during your visit to Cairo, I strongly recommend seeing both museums to experience two very different ways of exploring Egypt’s incredible history. This itinerary will allow you to see both, and the best that Cairo has to offer.
Final Thoughts
The Grand Egyptian Museum represents a new chapter in how the story of ancient Egypt is presented to the world.
Combining extraordinary artefacts with cutting-edge museum design, it offers visitors an unforgettable journey through thousands of years of history. The hope is that with this modern museum, many Egyptian artefacts housed in other museums around the world will be returned to Egypt to be housed in the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Whether you’re passionate about archaeology, history, or travel, this museum is easily one of the most impressive places to visit in Egypt.
